Eggplant, Luka, and A New Blogger

The rain came last night, and the outside world around me is wet and dreary. But I am extremely excited about it. Hopefully some of my vegetables will perk up and continue to grow strong. Obviously, the season is over for some of them. But there is always a hope that the others continue to yield more vegetables and fruit until the October frost.

I harvested those two beautiful eggplants that were growing strong. After considering all my options, I decided to cook a Vietnamese stir-fry with garlic, Thai chilies from my garden, and some Vietnamese soy condiments.

Below: The beautiful, long eggplants

Unlike the first eggplants I harvested, which looked completely seedless and young, these had small seeds. Its flesh was soft, which made cutting it very easy. The knife cut into its flesh, and it was a clean cut each time. I loved the contrasting colors between its white flesh and its purple body.

Below: The eggplants’ flesh (on our bamboo cutting board)

The final product was delicious. I ate it over white rice. No need for extra seasoning. It was spicy because of the Thai peppers, but I like things a little hot. I also cut up one small cucumber (the remainder from the garden) and ate that on the side. Delicious meal!

And now some overdue photos of Luka. She’s growing and is SO hyper. I do love that wherever I go, whatever room I am in, that’s where you’ll find her. She sleeps most of the day when I am working, but at night, she gets all crazy and tries to attack my legs. It’s not her claws that bother me, it’s her teeth. It’s annoying, and I play fetch with her to try to calm her down. But this is no regular cat. She seems to have more energy than anything I’ve ever seen. She will continue to play for hours at a time. I’ll be playing with her sometimes, and she’ll start to pant like a dog. I stop because I think she’s too tired. But she runs up and down the stairs for fun, even when she’s panting. She doesn’t want to stop.

Is this odd for a cat to pant?

Anyway, enjoy!

On a final note, I want to introduce my friend Jan to the Gardening community. After working in the publishing world, Jan made a career move to become an artist. And she is a beautiful artist at that! Check out her art blog.

Recently, Jan decided to start gardening. Because fall is upon us, she has decided to try some veggies in containers. Please check out her gardening blog and welcome her to the community. Her gardening blog is at http://squarefootgarden-jan.blogspot.com/

Welcome Jan!

It's been so long since I've had a little kitten in the house. I don't know about the panting, but when tiny kittens run, it sounds like buffalo stampeding up the stairs;) How does a 2 pound kitten they make that much noise?

I'll stop by your friends web site and say hi.

Yum, that eggplant dish looks fantastic, especially with the gorgeous eggplants you picked from your garden. Do you have a recipe for that dish? I'd love to try it!

Aw, Luka is adorable. We have two kitties and I miss them being kittens, but they are still punks, so I guess it's alright.

I had Egg plant parmesan for lunch today! Not from my garden but rather our favorite Italian restaurant for lunch.... Your dish looks yum-o. The Saint told me he read that the egg plant should be a bit soft when you pick it so maybe your eggplant was just right for the “pickens”….

Luka is so darn cute! Reminds me of my girls when they were younger. They are about 6 years old now but still playful and chase each other all over the house each morning and evening. They are not biters and I have trained them to not scratch the furniture with their claws. I clip them monthly to keep them dull. Since they are inside only, they don’t need sharp claws plus if I don’t clip them, they continue to grow and I am sure they are uncomfortable. If they were in the wild, they would keep them worn down from climbing trees and the such…

Hello dp

Cats normally do not pant as dogs do unless extremely overheated or stressed. They do sweat, but through their paws which is only a small surface area. It's not good if Luka's panting heavily. This means she's overheated and should be calmed down a little and be in a cool place. She's a young energetic cat and "full of beans" as they say. I suggest you play with her but make her calm down a little if she starts to pant.

As for the claws, I'm just very, very glad that you haven't had her declawed. It's an awful process which actually removes the end of the cats toe, not just the nail. This makes it hard for the cat to walk as they walk on their toes. Cats need to scratch, it's just not good when it's your legs!! :-(
Perhaps you could get Luka a good scratching post and rub a little catnip on it to encourage her to use it more.

Hi dp,
Ditto to what Mick said, cats are over exhurted when panting and like a puppy (will eat til they get sick....) kittens will play FOREVER! I'm glad you AND Skeeter did not declaw, ouch, ouch, ouch!
I'm lucky, both my cats like, NO love, the cardboard scratchpads you can buy at Wally world. It comes with cat nip.
You had sucess with eggplant!

Hi Marnie, I know what you mean. Luka likes to follow me, if I'm going down stairs, before I'm even one or two steps down, she's run and rush downstairs before I even get there. LoL.

Hi John, Thanks, I do love my kitten. The eggplant was delicious. It's so yummy to eat fresh food from my garden.

Hi Tina- Thanks. The eggplant was so yummy.

Hi Jennifer, Next time I make it, I will post the recipe on the blog. Normally, I just cook out of whim and throw together what tastes good and season to my taste, so I never measure, lol.

I really love my kitten. She's only 4 months, but she is kind of a punk too, lol. But a lovable one.

Hi Skeeter- It was getting a little soft, and that's when I picked them. I guess it was just right. Tell the Saint he's righto!

I wish Luka was not a biter. She has a scratching post that she scratches on throughout the day, but for some reason, she likes to nibble on my ankles and crawl on my leg and bite my hands and run away. I guess it's a "nip" but still.

I may have to try to clip her nails. When do you do it? When they are half asleep?

She doesn't scratch the furniture, thank goodness, but she might in t he future. Who knows? lol.

Hi PGL, I'll check it out. Thanks :-)

Hi Mick, No worries, I am completely against declawing. I think it is against the law of nature and very inhumane. I think it is absolutely cruel, and I think its awful that people do it. Their feet and claws are their natural defense, if they get lose outside, they need it to defend themselves. No matter how bad she is, I will never do such a thing to her. I love her too much.

I might try to clip her nails though. She also has a scratching post that she uses every day, and she does enjoy scratching on it. But she likes to climb up my leg and bite me. I need to break her of that habit. But I'm working on it. I am a weak momma. LoL. I spoil her.

Hi Dawn, Luka loves her scratching post too, she goes crazy for it, lol. I'm glad you also did not declaw. :-)

Thank you for the introduction, DP. And thanks to all of you for the nice welcome.

Wow, there's so much great information to read in this community, and so many beautiful pictures for the eyes to feast on! Your cooking abilities look amazing, DP, and I bet everything is extraordinarily delicious since you use vegetables you grew yourself.

My girls never sleep to the extent of letting me sneak up on them for grooming. lol... I have trained them to let me clip the nails. I let them sniff the clippers, then gently pick them up and lay them on their backs while in my lap then get to work. I am quick as they do bore easily. Afterwards, they get treats. They struggled with me when we first started to clip nails but in time, they learn they will be getting a treat so this is a good experience for them.

You must be careful to not clip the nails too short or it can hurt them and bleed then this will become a bad experience for them….
