The last of this year's apples were so perfect and ripe that I decided that I would make apple jam. I guess there's no such thing because I've never seen it at the store. It's always apple butter or apple preserves.
I used a package of pectin and followed the directions to make the jam. It's delicious and sweet, but the consistency and taste are a bit like apple sauce. It's a little thicker than apple sauce, but still it's pretty liquidy.
Next year, I think I will just make apple sauce and can it. The apples were perfect and were so delicious.
Here are a few photos.

Hi DP, you're right, I've never seen apple jam, but have seen apple jelly? Or is it always mixed with another fruit? Maybe that's the secret. It might be the interaction with the sugar. Applesauce needs so little sugar and isn't that what thickens the jam? Really I don't know much about it having never made any at all so what am I doing even saying anything? Just trying to be helpful I guess. HA Well I have made applesauce!!

To me, I like anything with apples on my bread! YUM! DP you should try making apple butter next year. We don't have any apple trees in our yard, but our neighbor has two large trees. Each year we trade them some pawpaw fruit and they give us lots of apples. We always make things like apple butter, or sauce, or we go outside to the fire pit, invite some friends over, and roast some of them! The apples not the friends! If we roasted some of our friends that may not be so yummy!
You have been busy and will be able to enjoy the garden all winter long:)
Wow, what a great amount of apple jam you have. What kind of apples did you make this from?
Yum! I'm not sure that applesauce or apple jam would last around our house. Or even applebutter. It would probably lead to a race to who could eat the most. My 3 year old daughter would probably win!
Apple sauce, or apple jam or apple perserves, what ever you chose to make. It all sounds yummy to me. Cant get enough of that stuff...
Bravo for your preserving efforts. Even if you have made a new apple goodie. I've only seen sauce, butter, or jelly but I'm sure the jam is good.
Sure sounds good to me dp. Cheers for you trying something new.
I've never had apple jam either--jelly, and applebutter, yum! Anyway it sounds great on warm, buttery toast.

You have had a good run with these apples! Gail
That apple jam is a great idea, DP! I have a friend who often gives me apples from her tree, and I need new ideas for them. :)
Hi Everyone,
