Lettuce

I apologize for the lack of posts this week. I have been busy, busy. I'm attending two writing conferences (one is next weekend, the other is in October in Birmingham). I've been getting ready and doing the research for the conferences. They're being sponsored by the Society of Children Book Writer's and Illustrators. I've written a multi-cultural chapter book for kids (grades 1-3), so I am hoping to pitch it to some agents and publishers. I'm very excited.

Anyway, the lettuce is my father's garden is doing very well. We've eating lots and lots of delicious salad. We grew Romaine and head lettuce. They're pretty delicious, and because we didn't wait until they formed a real head, no slugs!

Below: Numerous views of the lettuce

The seeds for this lettuce were planted in early August. I have a feeling the lettuce will begin to bolt before October comes. But it's been a nice crop for us, and I will try again next year.

I will be keeping my fingers crossed for a publisher! Good Luck...

Lettuce looks so fresh and green! I love the shade of green on lettuce. We have been eating more salads this year but the lettuce has been coming from the grocery store instead of my garden. Next year, I will do better...

Good luck with the conferences and I'm wishing you VERY GOOD LUCK in getting your childrens book published.

That lettuce looks fantastic. Mmmmm! There is nothing better than fresh, homegrown lettuce.

Hi DP, that is so cool, hope you get a bite from an agent or better yet a publisher! That lettuce looks so full of liquid, how is that possible when it has been so hot? Is it in some shade or was it shaded with t structure? I have lettuce but it is still in the seed packet waiting to be planted! LOL I was waiting until it cooled a little and we got some rain, we did not get any when you did the last time. ;-< Beautiful greens!

Good luck with the conferences, DP! SCBWI is a great organization.

I love seeing these beautiful pictures of the lettuce. They help me with my fantasy of what my lettuce will look like when it comes up (I planted romaine and leaf lettuce seeds about a week ago, and they're just sprouting). I didn't know that harvesting before they become heads means there will be no slugs. That's great.

Mother Nature- Thank you.

Tina- I'm loving the lettuce too.

Marnie- I totally agree. It is much better than store-bought.

Cindy- Thanks. The lettuce is delish, and I am enjoying it!

Skeeter- I hope next year you'll plant it. It is so easy to plant and grow and so delicious too.

Jennifer- I totally agree. Nothing is better than fresh lettuce.

Frances- Yup, that lettuce was planted in a shaded area, so it doesn't get that much sun every day. It has been hot, so I've been trying to water as much as possible.

Dawn- It is very crisp and the color is so pretty!

Jan- The lettuce is great and easy to grow. I am sure your lettuce will look awesome in no time. I had a bad experience with slugs this year, and I kept waiting until it formed a head, and when it finally did, the slugs were all sticky and grass inside, and the lettuce was not edible.

Hi pgl, Thanks, I bet it'll start to bolt soon, but I am enjoying it. Thank you for the wishes on the book.

Hi Susie- Thanks for the wishes. The lettuce was fresh and just heaven.

Hi Lola- Thank you! That would be wonderful if I could find an agent or publisher. The lettuce is great, good luck with yours! The fall weather should keep it from bolting, hopefully.

Hi Dave- This is my first children's book, but I've worked on non-fiction books before. I'm really excited about it.

Hi John, The lettuce tasted great. Salads are always better with food from your garden.

Hi Marmee- I do love to pick my own food and eat it. It's wonderful!
