Introducing Betty

I hope everyone had a great weekend! As you probably know by now, I try not to blog on the weekends because I try to relax.

Happy Monday to everyone.

Although my dear cantaloupe, Freddie, was delicious and so juicy, he was not the lone cantaloupe (as I've recently found out). As Freddie matured, a new cantaloupe formed. I didn't know if it would die (as my other baby cantaloupe did), but it survived!

It's growing strong! Already starting to lose its fuzziness ("babyhood").

Below: Introducing "Betty"

I've decided to call this new cantaloupe "Betty." I love the "ie" sounds, lol.

Betty is now the lone cantaloupe on the vine, unless another baby forms. I'm thinking that she'll be the last one of the season. But you never know, I might get pleasantly surprised!

D.P.-I love that fact you name your cantaloupes. I hope Betty grows up to be big and strong like Freddie.

Betty is going to be some good eating!

I love cantaloupe and watermelon. I am going to copy you..so...We will eat Harold the watermelon tomorrow. LOL..I grew some of those little 2 lb ones. They are really for short season but I like the idea of small ones for two people.

Hi Carla- LoL, Betty thanks your comment. She is a cute, little thing.

Hi Susie- Thanks! I hope she's as yummy as Freddie too! I only have one cantaloupe at a time, so why not have fun and give them names? lol.

Hi Skeeter- Hm, maybe I will have to name my watermelon next. Maybe a flinestone melon family! LoL!!!

Hi Dawn- Haha, yep, pebbles and bam bam are next for names. Skeeter is so creative in her comments!

Hi Tina- Yep! I love my cantaloupe family. It is just way too fun, and I definitely love it!

Hi Eve-I can't wait to eat Betty. Oh, Harold the watermelon! I hope he's yummy. 2 lb melons are still delicious, even if they are small. And it's great that you don't have to wait for months and months before harvesting!

That is so cute to name your cantalopes - maybe I should name my tomatoes - there are so few LOL

Why not name your veggies--after all you take care of them & nourish them as a child. Hopefully you talk to them also. I do. They even respond to soft music. My neighbors use to make fun of me spanking my pear trees. Ha
Had lots of pears.

Hi DP, Betty and Freddie and a nice pair of lopes. That is something I have never tried to grow. You have given me motivation though to give it a try next year. I know that you don't have a lot of room, my problem also, so there must be way. Do you have them hanging over the sides of your box?

Hi plantgirl- I love naming my vegetables. Sorry about your tomatoes. Maybe next year, it'll be better!

Hi Lola, I'd name all my veggies, except there are so many of them. lol. I just name the ones that are loners in the garden. The cantaloupe because they only grow one at a time. But my veggies are like my babies. LoL. I'll have to try it one year. Maybe soft music will make them grow better. Haha, spanking your pear tree. Too funny!

Hi Frances, The melons didn't do so well in the square foot garden. I planted them on a raised bed with lots of black kow mixed in, and they did wonderful. I planted the cantaloupe in the middle of a circle raised bed, and they ended up spreading out, but not too bad. They are actually fun to grow. I hope you try it next year!
