Boysenberry, Year # 2

My boysenberry bush came back this year! Last year, it fruited like crazy, but sadly, all the birds got to them before I had even a chance to harvest any. I did get to eat one, but it was rather sour. :-/

Maybe this year, if I leave it on the bush long enough and if I can keep the birds away, I'll have a wonderful harvest and abundance to munch on. Hopefully, they will be sweeter too!

I've put up bird netting around the bush. Can you see it in the picture below?

Can you see how beautiful and abundant that bush is? I think it's the best purchase I've ever made! They grow so well and so full. Sadly, it's only for the month of May that it'll be so green and fruiting. But I'm glad it comes back again next year.

The flowers of the boysenberry are a lovely white color with the fruit in the middle. The plant itself is full of little thorns, so when it's time to pick the fruit, I'll have to be extra careful.

The plant is getting very tall. But we've got that wire fencing behind it, so that it can climb up rather than out.

Some up-close photos of the fruit. These were taken right after a good rain.

I've never seen one of these plants before!

Hi Dawn, the black fencing has worked really well for our climbing plants!

Hi Darla, Thanks for visiting my blog. The boysenberry is a mix of a blackberry and a raspberry, if my memory is correct.

Boysenberries are delicious! I hope the bird netting gives you a chance to harvest some of those yummy berries. :)

Looks great! You just have to check daily and beat those pesky birds!

Oh I hope you get to eat some before they disappear this year. I've never eaten this fruit before. I see in your comment to Darla what it is a mix of. Sounds good!

Will you make any jam or jelly? What beautiful pictures!

This looks like our black berries (also full of thorns) or rasberries, guess they are related. Looks like you have quite a little harvest coming:)

Hi Racquel, I love boysenberries too. I hope I get to eat some this year. Bad birds! Grr!

Hi Tina-I know, those birds are annoying. I wonder if giving them a birdbath would help or bird seed...

Hi Susie, I had never seen the fruit before either. Last year, I saw it at Home Depot on sale, so I bought it. And then I googled it. Turns out it's a jam that many people eat. But i love the real fruit.

Hi Aaron, thanks for visiting. I think I'll be eating it. i don't think I get enough to make jam.

Hi Carla, I do think they are related. They look very similar, don't they?

Hi DP, good deal with the netting, hope it does the trick, for the flowers look like you will get a good harvest. I have never tried Boysenberries, but they do look like the raspberry family. Yum!

Looking good DP. I hope you get to eat all you want. I've never had any of these.
I picked 4 Blueberries of my little tree today. They sure were sweet.

My dad loves the boysenberry syrup at IHOP. I've never thought to grow them though, I may have to suggest it to him!

Hi Frances- If the birds leave them alone, I'll get some delicious berries. They are in the raspberry family. It makes me want to plant raspberries too!

Hi Lola-Ooh, the blueberries sound delicious. How did you keep the birds and animals from getting to them first? Enjoy! I can't wait until mine ripen!

Hi Dave-I have never heard of boysenberry syrup. I'll have to go Ihop and try it. It sounds delicious! The boysenberries are very easy to grow and take care of, so I highly recommend it!
